MEJIA VOTES NO ON RESOLUTION CONDEMNING SOCIALISM, AND ON “AMERICAN ELECTIONS FOR AMERICAN CITIZENS ONLY”

WAYNE, N.J., September 8, 2026. Rep. Analilia Mejía (D-11th District) voted against a House resolution condemning socialism and affirming that American elections are for American citizens only, a vote that puts her at odds with the working families of Essex, Morris and Passaic counties she was elected to represent, according to Joseph Caruso, chairman of the America Rising Political Action Committee.

Mejía did not miss the vote. She did not vote “present.” On September 1, on Roll Call 289, she voted No on H.R. 1490, which passed the House 220 to 192.

The resolution states that “socialist ideology necessitates a concentration of power that has, time and time again, collapsed into … totalitarian rule, and repressive dictatorships,” and that socialism “has repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of over 100 million people worldwide.”

It also does something Mejía has never explained to her constituents. It puts New Jersey’s own election failures on the record. The resolution finds that “the State of New Jersey registered nearly 6,600 noncitizens to vote, with reportedly hundreds successfully voting in elections.”

“Six thousand six hundred people who are not American citizens were put on New Jersey’s voter rolls, and Analilia Mejía voted against a resolution that simply says our elections belong to American citizens,” said Caruso. “There is no third position on that question. You either believe an American election belongs to Americans, or you don’t. Her vote answers it.”

What Mejía Voted Against

The resolution she opposed did five things. It condemned socialism. It reaffirmed support for free, fair and secure elections. It stated that American elections are for American citizens only. It recommitted the House to upholding the United States Constitution. And it called for enactment of the SAVE America Act to prevent noncitizen voting.

“She voted no on all of it, including the line about upholding the Constitution,” Caruso said. “I’d like her to stand in a diner in Wayne or Bloomfield or Parsippany and explain which of those five things she objected to.”

A Record She Won’t Discuss

The resolution specifically names the Democratic Socialists of America, citing the group’s platform planks calling for “noncitizens and incarcerated criminals to vote in American elections” and for “abolishing the U.S. Senate.”

Mejía has never publicly stated her relationship to that organization or its platform. What is on the record is her alignment with its wing of the party. She served as national political director for  U.S. Senator  Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign. She was elected with the backing of Sen. Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – all supporters of socialism. In July she endorsed Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary. Then she left New Jersey and traveled to Michigan to campaign for him in person, a trip her own campaign documented in photographs it published itself.

El-Sayed won that primary on August 4.

“While families in her district were dealing with property tax bills and grocery prices, their congresswoman was 600 miles away in Michigan working to elect somebody else’s senator,” said Caruso. “That is a statement of her priorities, which do not seem to be the people in her district.”

A couple days ago, she escalated further, launching a national super PAC called Unbought, Unbossed PAC to recruit and fund candidates in her own mold across the country, according to a report by Axios.

“Rep. Mejia is not concerned with the day-to-day issues faced by her  New Jersey constituents; she is interested in mounting a fund-raising operation to export her socialist views around the country,” said Caruso. “The people of the 11th District did not send her to Washington to build a movement. They sent her to represent them.”

The History Behind the Words

Caruso, an entrepreneur who built several companies over 15 years, said the House resolution’s language that Mejia failed to support documents the history of socialism. The history of socialist and communist leaders running what became totalitarian regimes has been repeated time and again – most notably with the rise of Joseph Stalin who seized control of Russia and forcibly created the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. (USSR) – which crumbled on December 26, 1991; 69 years after it started.

“Compare the Soviet Union’s brief, brutal 69 years of existence, with America’s 250-year history of liberty and capitalism, said Caruso. “There is no comparison.”

Under Stalin’s totalitarian regime, private family farms were forcibly seized and merged into state run collectives, producing the grain shortages and famines that killed millions. Dissent was punished. Government transparency did not exist. Historians estimate Stalin killed between 10 and 20 million of his own people through forced labor camps and executions.

“Every one of those socialist systems started with the same promise Rep. Mejía and her allies are making today: that concentrating power in the state will make life better for working people,” said Caruso. “It has never once worked. Not one time, on any continent, in any century. The socialis movement in the U.S. is a political power grab from a people determined to subjugate Americans, period!”

The Questions She Should Answer

“Rep. Mejía owes the voters of CD-11 three straight answers before November,” said Caruso. “Does she support noncitizens voting in American elections, yes or no? Does she support abolishing the United States Senate, yes or no? And what specifically in a resolution condemning famine, mass murder and dictatorship did she find objectionable enough to vote against?

“The families of Essex, Morris and Passaic counties deserve those answers in plain English. Not a press release. Not a statement from a spokesman. From her.”
